Fill the percolator with cold, filtered water to the desired level. Most percolators have measurement marks to guide you.
  4. 4
    Step 2: Insert Basket
  5. 5
Place the percolator basket and tube assembly into the pot. The tube should reach nearly to the bottom of the pot.
  6. 6
    Step 3: Add Coffee
  7. 7
Add coarsely ground coffee to the basket. Use about 1 tablespoon per cup of water. Avoid fine grinds which can make coffee bitter.
  8. 8
    Step 4: Begin Percolating
  9. 9
Place percolator on medium heat. Watch for the coffee to begin bubbling in the glass knob on top. Reduce heat to maintain gentle percolation.
  10. 10
    Step 5: Time and Serve
  11. 11
Percolate for 7-10 minutes depending on desired strength. Remove from heat and let settle for 1 minute before serving to allow grounds to settle.
